Let me break it down.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><strong>What You Need to Know:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>AI startup funding hit <strong>$120B globally<\/strong> in Q1 2026 \u2014 up 40% year-over-year<\/li>\n<li>The &#8220;AI wrapper&#8221; playbook is <strong>mostly dead<\/strong> \u2014 investors want defensible moats, not just API access<\/li>\n<li>Perplexity secured <strong>$500M Series D<\/strong> at a $5.5B valuation, doubling down on search<\/li>\n<li>Several AI coding startups are <strong>already being displaced<\/strong> by GitHub Copilot&#8217;s improvements<\/li>\n<li>The hot verticals: <strong>AI safety tooling, compliance automation, and domain-specific reasoning<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>Why the &#8220;AI Wrapper&#8221; Playbook Died<\/h2>\n<p>If you started an AI startup in 2023 by wrapping the GPT-4 API in a nice UI, I have bad news: that company is probably struggling.
