Hands-On: Anthropic’s Claude Computer Use in the Real World

Hey guys, Monday here. I spent two weeks using Anthropic’s Claude Computer Use feature in real-world workflows — coding, research, document processing, the whole mix. Here’s my honest take after the novelty wore off.

What You Need to Know:

  • Claude Computer Use lets Claude see and interact with your screen — moves mouse, types, reads UI
  • Can complete multi-step workflows that would normally require several tools chained together
  • Task completion rate is impressive for simple sequences, inconsistent on complex flows
  • Running costs add up fast — screen capture frames add significant token overhead
  • Best used as a supervised assistant — great for experienced users watching what it does

What Actually Works Well

Documentation and codebase navigation is where Computer Use genuinely shines. Claude can read a file, understand the context, navigate to a related file, make an edit, verify the change worked — all in a single coherent session. That’s the workflow I’ve been waiting for. Instead of copy-pasting code into a chat window and asking “does this make sense,” you can just let Claude loose in the codebase and have a conversation about what’s actually there.

Form filling and data entry is another genuine win. I had a stack of research notes I needed to transcribe into a spreadsheet. Instead of doing it manually, I set Claude loose with screen access and verified each entry. It was like having a very patient intern who never gets tired of repetitive tasks.

Where It Falls Down

Dynamic web interfaces trip it up more than I’d like. Sites with heavy JavaScript, infinite scroll, complex state management — Claude sometimes clicks the wrong thing or gets stuck in loops. It’s not disaster-level failures, but it’s frequent enough that you can’t walk away and come back to a completed task. Plan to be in the loop.

The token costs are real. Screen frames — even compressed ones — add up quickly. A 30-minute coding session can run through a nontrivial chunk of your token budget. Budget-conscious users need to be deliberate about when they use screen mode versus text-only mode.

Is It Worth It?

For developers and researchers: yes, with conditions. The workflow of “be in the room, let Claude do the work, verify the output” is genuinely productive for certain task types. For non-technical users or anyone expecting fully autonomous operation: not yet. This is a power-user tool that rewards expertise.

Bottom Line: Claude Computer Use is the most practical screen-use AI feature I’ve tested. It’s not “set it and forget it” — it’s closer to “supervised intern mode.” Used deliberately, it’s a genuine productivity multiplier. Used carelessly, it’s an expensive way to watch an AI click wrong buttons.
